The Foundation for the WA Museum is proud to support the Naval Sea Power in Miniature, a spectacular exhibition now open at the WA Shipwrecks Museum. Free to visit from 24 February to 26 July 2026, this much-loved exhibition showcases one of Australia’s most remarkable private collections of handcrafted model ships.
The Foundation was thrilled to join CEO of the Western Australian Museum Alec Coles, along with WA Museum staff, donors, Navy representatives and even the Shipwreck Hunters, to officially open the exhibition on Monday the 23rd of February.
Created over more than five decades by master ship modeller Gerry Westenberg, the exhibition brings centuries of maritime history vividly to life. Featuring more than 170 exquisitely detailed models, visitors are invited on a journey across time from ancient vessels and the age of sail to iconic naval ships of the modern era.
Each miniature is meticulously crafted, capturing extraordinary levels of technical accuracy and artistry. Together, the collection tells powerful stories of exploration, conflict, innovation and human endurance, revealing the lives of the ships and the people who sailed them. Highlights include legendary naval warships, historic merchant vessels, and striking dioramas that recreate pivotal moments in maritime history, including Fremantle Harbour’s crucial role during World War II.
This exhibition is the most extensive presentation of Westenberg’s work to date, offering visitors of all ages an immersive and inspiring experience. Through interactive digital content, videos and interpretive displays, Naval Sea Power in Miniature connects audiences with the drama, ingenuity and bravery that have shaped life at sea.
